Entrepreneur and philanthropist 

Born in Kishinev (Moldova), Alexander Tynkovan holds dual citizenship of Moldova and Cyprus. Having graduated with honours from Moscow Energy Institute in 1992 as the Soviet Union collapsed, in 1993, Alexander, with two partners, founded M.Video, one of the first consumer electronics retail companies in Russia. They started with one tiny store and, in 15 years, became the largest Russian consumer electronics retail company with around 30% of the market share. M.Video went public in 2007 and was the first Russian IPO in the non-food retail sector. M.Video has been Alexander’s sole business enterprise up to 2017 when Alexander and his partners sold their stakes in the company. Alexander is a keen philanthropist who has been regularly contributing part of his largess to cultural, social and charitable institutions.

Alexander was a big contributor to The Foundation for the Support of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Russia’s renowned art museum, a long-term supporter of WWF (World Wildlife Fund), as well as a few organisations focused on children’s healthcare and education. UWC Dilijan is among the causes Alexander supports by funding scholarships for Romanian and Moldovan students. Alexander lives permanently in Cyprus.
