Title: Director, UWCD Astrophysics Summer Academy 
Location: Dilijan, Armenia 


About the Program: The UWC Dilijan Astrophysics Summer Academy is a four-week residential enrichment school (July 4 – August 1, 2027) for 24–36 students aged 15–17, on the campus of UWC Dilijan in Dilijan, Armenia. Students and faculty live and work as a community while completing an end-to-end research project observing and characterizing variable star light curves.

About the Role: The Director holds full authority and responsibility for all academic aspects of the program and reports to the UWC Dilijan Summer Program Coordinator. On campus, the Director works alongside two PhD-holding Lecturers, a Residential Director, and four university-aged Resident Fellows (RFs).

Location: UWC Dilijan is an international boarding school set within a national park in the forested mountain town of Dilijan, Armenia, roughly 100 km northeast of Yerevan. One of 18 United World Colleges, it brings together students from around 80 countries in pursuit of peace and cross-cultural understanding.

Qualifications

●      PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or closely related field; observational experience strongly preferred

●      At least five years of university-level teaching experience

●      Demonstrated commitment to mentoring students, particularly undergraduates

●      Familiarity with light curve fitting, remote observational techniques, data analysis pipelines, statistics, and Python highly desired

●      Prior experience in educational leadership highly desired

Responsibilities: The Director manages overall academic progress, delivers approximately one-third of the program's lectures, supervises the Lecturers, and trains and manages the RFs. Pre-summer responsibilities include helping hire and train the RF team, developing the master campus schedule, and leading faculty planning. Post-summer responsibilities include a comprehensive written report and student evaluations, submitted by September 1.

Time Commitment: This is an intensive residential position. The Director is expected to engage with UWCD staff beginning January 2027 for training and pre-arrival planning. On campus, academic programming runs Monday–Friday from 9 AM to late evening and Saturday mornings. Faculty are expected to join most lunches, all dinners, and field trips. After the summer, the Director should remain available to write student letters of recommendation.
