Jo Moorhead

Teacher of English

  • MA English Literature, University of St Andrews, UK
  • PGCE in English, University of Manchester, UK

After graduating from university I worked as an English language assistant in public schools in Japan and France. I enjoyed these experiences so much that I felt sure that the classroom was the right place for me. I qualified as a teacher via the Teach First programme and then taught in the UK for several years. Before coming to Dilijan, I coordinated projects for a non-profit organisation which supported students from low-income backgrounds in applying to top universities and entering aspirational professions.

What is the favourite part of the course you teach?
Whether we're analysing a poem in English Language and Literature or discussing global poverty in English B, I love that there is no one single right answer to the questions we ask. One of the benefits of working in an international classroom is the diversity of opinions and often heated debates amongst students - I learn something new every day.

What is your ideal classroom environment?
The perfect classroom environment is one where everyone feels safe to speak their mind and make mistakes.

What advice would you give to a student of your subject?
Don't compare yourself to other students. You have all come from different backgrounds and experiences and so you should be aiming to make what is good progress for you - be patient with yourself and never give up.

Who is your role model or mentor or who inspires you?
Maria Montessori - "We are not created only to enjoy the world, we are created in order to evolve the cosmos."

What is your life motto?
Failure is learning how to succeed.

What are the three things you can't imagine your life without?
1. Family & friends
2. Beautiful nature
3. Karaoke

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy hiking and being outdoors in all weathers - this is probably why I was so excited about living in Dilijan! I also love singing, reading a good book, and making a mess in my kitchen.
